Jim,

C'mon, admit it. The iPhone is a beuatifully crafted phone that changed the mobile world forever. It's as important as when I first got email. It just plain works. It's also (and this one of those facts so please don't argue with me, argue instead with Mary Meeker) the fastest growing consumer technology ramp ever. The App store just hit 3 billion downloads and we yawned. 3 billion! When was the last time three billion of anything moved through any marketplace? Especially one about 18 months old.

The Droid is a heavy ass phone with a completely useless redundant physical keyboard (put there only to help sell to Blackberry neophytes who didn't believe that a screen keyboard would work for them). And within two weeks Droid users realize that the onscreen keyboard is better because of the vibrative haptic response. And then they stop using the physical one.

The Droid is a great start. Truly phenomenal. But it comes nowhere near to the homerun that the iPhone was or is.

The iPad will launch and it will be fantastic. I hope you don't miss it because of personal bias.

And Chrome/Android will answer and they will over time develop something really cool. But the race has not been called.

In the mobile space it is now only Apple and Google and that's a remarkable change. To see the once mighty Blackberry as a mere dead man walking is sad. But that's what it is. It's DOS like tools will be around for another three years because they have burrowed so deeply into slow moving enterprises. But I wouldn't call that a Sun Tzu like advantage.

And it's odd to call it a race between Google and Apple when there are so many other pieces in the pipeline, like, well, carriers. But as they feared they have become dumb pipes. And the game is in the hand of users and the developers. As long as Google and Apple don't get too greedy then they can work this market for years. The real mobile internet is about two years old and it's going to have some teething problems. But the sheer size of the market is just astonishing. It makes that little Internet game we've been playing look laughably small.

Your posted links are for more than installing a new theme, they are for rooting the phone.

I believe you Iphone fans call this Jailbreaking your phone, and if you look at the instructions for jailbreaking an iphone, they can be quite similar to rooting your android phone.

While Android is not as polished as the 3 year old iPhone, it's not bad for a 1 year old product. I think you may have hardware issues, or have installed poorly written software to make it as unstable as you report. My Droid has not crashed once.
